Unsurprisingly, given her wide-ranging artistic focus since the start of Tarnation , Indoor Universe isn't so much a new direction for Paula Frazer as simply a further consolidation of her strengths, at once drawing on the sheer variety that she enjoys working with while still maintaining a key central vision.
Her rich, classically country vocals again ground her music in a sound of mythic America, as much as, say, the singing of her fellow Bay Area musician Chris Isaak , and like Isaak , she quietly, carefully combines things into an all-encompassing style. If anything there might also be a hint of the Walkabouts ' similarly open-eared encapsulation of approaches -- a song like "Gone" touches on everything from Gene Pitney 's operatic pop drama to Burt Bacharach 's supreme easy listening and a hint of post-punk guitar atmospherics.
Her backing musicians this time around are among her best choices yet, with Patrick Main being the key collaborator, his work on keys and occasional percussion often providing the lead melody for many pieces. Sinatra vocally , haunted strings adding to the final impact even as her voice winningly cuts across them.
For all that, there's a lot of implicit theatricality to much of Indoor Universe -- check out "Deep Was the Night" for another stellar example -- and many songs aim for a gentler approach, even when the lyrics are a touch more barbed, as on the end-of-the-romance "Think of Me. Which is why, of course, she brought in Kentucky duo the Watson Twins to provide bluegrass harmonies for the entire record. Which is to say that Rabbit Fur Coat doesn't quite live up to its billing -- especially when compared to The Greatest , Cat Power 's genuine white-soul album that hit the stores the week after Lewis ' solo affair.
Not that Lewis has Case 's throaty voice or commanding presence -- she can growl and slide into notes, but at her core she has a small, fragile voice, one that lends this muted set of songs intimacy, even if it also brings them to the verge of cutsiness. And that's not a word that should be associated with Rabbit Fur Coat , an album that's designed to be a comforting late-night confessional, from rousing stompers like "The Big Guns" through the bluesy crawl of "Rise Up With Fists" to bittersweet ruminations like the seemingly autobiographical title track and the cheerful, gangs-all-here singalong to the Traveling Wilburys "Handle With Care.
At her best, her songs have a grace and flow that obscure these flaws -- such as on "Happy," whose melody and attitude are not all that far removed from her most prominent booster in rock's old guard, Elvis Costello -- and -- even if they're still quite prominent upon any close listen.
And since Rabbit Fur Coat is an album that's designed for close listening, that's a bit of a problem, but as a pure sonic experience, it's a moody, atmospheric listen that never gets quite as melancholy as it suggests and holds together better than any Rilo Kiley album to date. Nogatco Kool Keith - Nogatco Rd. Nogatco Rd. Review by David Jeffries. Taking on yet another persona, whacked-out rapper Kool Keith becomes Mr. Nogatco for the '50s sci-fi- and U. Octagon , the Nogatco character Octagon backward is nearly as well defined, leaving less fleshed-out concepts like Thee Undatakerz in the dust.
Nogatco is the flip side to Keith 's intergalactic persona Black Elvis, paranoid rather than bold and murky instead of bright. Keith sounds like he recorded most of the album crashed in a recliner, feet up, and mic dangling at the corner of his mouth.
His weary, stream-of-consciousness delivery suits the post-alien abduction theme of the album while playing nice with producer Iz-Real 's eerie landscapes. Although it's a moody album that works best when allowed to run start to finish, "Bionic Fuse," "Night Flyer," and "Live Dissection" with underground heroes Sage Francis and Sole guesting should make their way onto any hardcore fan's next Kool Keith mixtape. The real reason the faithful will drool is the enhanced CD's bonus features, which include a comic strip and an X-Files-esque mini-movie that's totally spaced out.
Dooom Kool Keith - Dr. Dooom 2 Kool Keith - Tashan Dorrsett Hot Chip make brilliant electronic pop music from heavy synths and distorted guitars, played over an overworked drum machine.
Their track Over and Over is full of screeching solos heald up by nervous keyboard rythms and a longing chorus asking its listeners to "lay back". It is a testament to their identifiable, unique sound that has enough room to allow for variety and enough consistency to keep the listener's attention. New Young Pony Club are an electronically flavored blend of minimal guitars, seductively disinterested vocals, and sexual innuendo.

A lot of people liked the single because of its catchy chorus but never bothered to give the entire album a listen. Songs like "You Don't Want To Fuck With Me" and "Nigga Please" are a lot better then the release but their lyrical content made it impossible for them to become main stream singles. Anyone who liked Ol' Dirty Bastard should have this one in their collection.
